They gather me up
These trees
They gather me up
To mend my wounds
And restore the depth of my soul
To the balance of me.
They gather me up
Roots and branches
Tops and tips
Bending to match the height
Of my heart in their presence.
They gather me
As a prayer to the wind
And absolution to the soil
And the moments of Grace
Which I forget
When the trees are left forgotten
Because I have lost myself.
They gather me up
As gentle reminder
That I am seen and loved.
Like these trees
I matter
They gather me up.
I wrote this poem while standing in one of my favorite places in Portland, Oregon’s Forest Park. Along the longest trail in the park, the Wildwood, is the Redwood Deck. This deck is located in that part of the arboretum where the majestic Redwood trees are located. The pictures shows the entry view. Stepping to the far edge of the deck is stepping up and into the Redwood forest. The tops of these wonderful trees soar above, guiding, guarding, gathering me up.
A lot of my writing just comes in the moment. I feel an urge rise to put pen to paper. No outline. Not much forethought. Out the words come, all on their own. For me its always an act of mindfulness. A mindful moment.
